The timeless strategic link between Lemnos – Gallipoli – The Straits of Dardanelles

From prehistory to modern times Lemnos, due to the proximity to the peninsula of Gallipoli, played the role of the intermediate station and bridgehead to control the Straits of the Dardanelles, in the operations of many armies and navigators to conquer the natural wealth and metalliferous areas of the Black Sea.

Moreover, Poliochni in Limnos was the most important prehistoric city of the northern Aegean with a long duration, one thousand years older than Troy and had a strategic position in trafficking precious metals and cultural goods between Asia Minor and the Aegean society.

Limnos played an important role concerning geostrategic events since the ancient times, as evidenced by the numerous historical and mythological references: the Trojan war, the Argonauts, conflict between Sparta – Athens during the Peloponnesian war during which Athenians were defeated in the Battle despite the river of Aegos at Gallipoli, Dardanelles, the Venetian domination in the Aegean, the Crimean War battle of Gallipoli among Allies of the Entente and the Turks.
