The premises of the Alliance army in Lemnos

Portianos is the geographical center for camping of the army and care facilities of the Entente Allies in Lemnos during the First World War and especially during the period of the Battle of Gallipoli (1915-1916). The naval base and naval and port infrastructure of the Allies were developed in Moudros.

East of the Gulf of Moudros, a large area on the coast and the surrounding hills where there are the villages Kallithea (Sharp), Pedino, Tsimantria, Portianou and a small peninsula called Punta, tens of thousands of Allied soldiers were stationed into zones. It is estimated that 60-70.000 soldiers of the army of the Entente transferred in Lemnos were sent partially to Gallipoli.

The initiator of the Battle of Gallipoli Winston Churchill, whose the chair is kept in the Folklore Museum of Portianos, stayed briefly at the mansion of C. Konstantinou in Portianos.
Roads, rails for trolleys, a desalination plant, bakeries, restaurants and hospitals were built in the area. Theree was a vast encampment with tents, buildings and barracks, a real ”cosmopolis”.
