Operations of ANZAC in Gallipoli

The naval operations of the Allies against Gallipoli, in the Straits of the Dardanelles, which began in March of 1915, had many losses and ultimately failed. So, the landing of Allied forces on the peninsula was decided. The first landing craft division was a battalion of the Australian 3rd Brigade on the northern coast of the peninsula, on the Ari Burnu bay, later named cove of Anzac. The landing took place south of the specified open coast, forcing the units to land in a narrow cove and be decimated by overlying Turkish bunkers. Simultaneously, other landings of the British and French armies were taking place around the cape peninsula. The cove of Anzac was a rough area.

The men who were traveling in large boats carrying light weapons landed on Sunday morning, April 25, under the gunfire barrage of Turkish bunkers skirmished in the highest points of the palisade. Until noon, more Australian and New Zealand units followed, under the command of General Birdwood. The violent clashes that followed in ravines and tough terrains were equivocal and could not create a bridgehead. The losses for the attackers were huge. It was recorded that hundreds of men were killed in the early hours of the landing.

The men of the ANZAC, although inexperienced in war, during the operations in Gallipoli, evolved into tough warriors and the reputation of their heroism grew to legendary proportions. Several months of hostilities followed on other fronts of the peninsula as well, without success for the Allies. Finally, on December 18th the Allied forces withdrew from Gallipoli. Among the huge losses of the Allies and Turks in Gallipoli, were 7,300 Australians and 2,400 New Zealanders (in total, 21.255 British, 10.000 French, 1.358 Indians and 86.692 Turks were killed. Tens of thousands were the wounded and missing).

The dramatic adventure of the ANZAC in Gallipoli and Lemnos contributed to the development of national consciousness in Australia and New Zealand and forged the concept of national identity in the new continent.
